Acquire substantive knowledge in the discipline of their choice sufficient for further study, and/or demonstrate competencies required by employers to be hired and succeed in the workplace. In my Gen Ed program I've taken a broad variety of courses in disciplines such as Biology, Sociology, Photography, Political Science...etc.
Communicate effectively. My Composition courses highlight my ability to communicate effectively in a variety of written genres. In addition, I used what I learned in those Composition courses to write an effective paper on international law for my International Politics course. My presentation skills are demonstrated in the Powerpoint presentation I made in my Computer Essentials course.
Develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study. Of course, I improved my quantitative literacy in my Math courses. One thing I learned about Math is that I do use it in other disciplines. For instance, my response papers in my Sociology class almost always required me to deal with important socio-economic data. I had to understand, interpret, and correctly represent that data.
Think critically. My ability to think critically is evident in most of my artifacts, but I'd like to direct your attention to my Biology lab report, because that was an unstructured problem my lab partner and I had to confront. And, since creative expression is a type of critical thinking, I would also like you to look at my mini-portfolio of cityscapes that I did in my Photography class.
Develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged, and/or to work with others in a professional and constructive manner. Have a look at my service-learning projects and journal. Also, I satisfied the American Institutions requirement by taking a U.S. Politics and Government course in which I learned about how the political system works and what my rights and responsibilities are. I gave a presentation to the class about campaign finance. My involvement in Bruin Volleyball shows how I worked together with my teammates to create a winning season. During my study abroad trip to London I worked with my fellow students--often 24/7--to get to know London and accomplish our educational program.
